In part 4, we will look at the locations of the “House” thermals. Knowing where they are could be the difference between one of those absolutely magic paragliding flights or a short “foofie” which to me is a blessing as well…

The image above shows the house thermals on the South-Western side. The two most reliable house thermals are the two coming from the two big rocks right in the middle of the slope and just below the path that takes you to the Top take off site.

The image above shows the thermals on the South to South-Eastern sides. Please remember that should explore these areas in a very well developed Wind shadow and make sure that you have enough height to make the glide to the designated landing area.

The image above shows the house thermals on the Western side of Lions Head. The strongest thermal can be found on the big rock right in the middle of the slope. In wind shadow conditions we often find nice gentle thermals over the rocky areas, especially in the morning as this side of the slope gets more sunlight.

FAQs
What are house thermals and why are they important for paragliding?
House thermals are rising columns of warm air that can significantly enhance your paragliding experience. They are typically found near large rocks or structures that absorb heat from the sun. Understanding their locations, especially on the South-Western and Western sides of Lions Head, can help you achieve longer flights. The two most reliable thermals are near the big rocks in the middle of the slope. By utilizing these thermals, you can gain altitude and enjoy a more extended and enjoyable flight.
What should I consider when flying in wind shadow conditions?
When flying in wind shadow conditions, it's crucial to ensure you have enough altitude to glide safely to your landing area. Wind shadows can create unpredictable air currents, so it's advisable to explore these areas with caution. Look for gentle thermals over rocky regions, especially in the morning when they receive more sunlight. Always prioritize safety and be aware of your surroundings to make informed decisions during your flight.
What is the best time to paraglide from Lions Head?
The best time to paraglide from Lions Head is typically in the morning when the sun has warmed the slopes, creating ideal thermal conditions. The South Westerly wind direction is also favorable for paragliding, as it provides consistent airflow. It's essential to check weather conditions and thermal activity before your flight to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Always consult with experienced instructors for the best times to fly.
What are some essential gear items for beginner paragliders?
As a beginner paraglider, having the right gear is crucial for safety and comfort. Essential items include a well-fitted harness, a reliable paraglider wing, a helmet, and a reserve parachute.
